A: An acknowledgment is a type of notarization where the signer confirms to the notary public that they willingly signed the document. The signature may have been made earlier or in the notary’s presence, but the signer must personally appear before the notary to acknowledge it.
A jurat, on the other hand, requires the signer to swear or affirm under oath that the contents of the document are true and correct, and the signer must sign the document in front of the notary at the time of notarization.
Both acknowledgments and jurats are common in Arizona notarizations, and as a commissioned notary public I can perform either type of notarial act depending on the document’s requirements. If you are unsure which one is needed, always check with the document’s recipient before the notarization.
